2nd Sunday of Advent, 12/09/2018

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

As a reminder, we will be introducing High Mass on a regular basis at 11:30 am Holy Mass. Michael Kramer will serve as cantor at those Masses not served by the choir. He will be making use of hymns for processional and recessional.  The hymns used will come from the books available in the pews and the numbers will on the hymn board at the front of the Church.  Everyone is encouraged to join in singing not only the hymns, but also to continue our tradition at the Oratory by chanting along with the cantor at the appropriate times.  The opportunity for Sung Mass on a regular basis is a great grace for our community.

READNG THE GOSPEL IN ENGLISH

As of the First Sunday of Advent, The Oratory adopted a new practice for the celebration of the Holy Mass: The Gospel will be read in English before the Homily. The faithful are asked to remain standing as the priest approaches the pulpit, stay standing for the Gospel which will be read without any introduction and conclude without any response. After the Gospel is read in English, the faithful may be seated.

CONFESSIONS – DECEMBER 15, 2018 from 9:00 am until 12:00 Noon.

The faithful of both the Oratory and St. Luke will have the opportunity for an extended period of confessions on Saturday morning, December 15, 2018 from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm.  Both Msgr. Morris and Fr. Blake will be available for confession during that time.  If you have had difficulty getting to confession, this may serve as the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the tribunal of mercy especially in preparation for Christmas.

CHRISTMAS CELELBRATION

The celebration of the Lord’s Birth on Christmas Day will be slightly different from years past. The principal Holy Mass will be at Midnight. This will be High Mass assisted by our choir with incense. On Christmas morning, the Oratory will celebrate Holy Mass at 7:30 am. This will be Low Mass without the presence of the organ. Part of this schedule is determined by the Holy Mass being celebrated by Saint Luke at 9:00 am on Christmas morning.

SUNDAY COFFEE HOUR (Cancelled on the dates below)

Coffee Hour after the 11:30 am Holy Mass is cancelled on December 23rd in preparation for Christmas and on December 30th in order to accommodate the Open House that day.

OPEN HOUSE

On Sunday, December 30, 2018, the Rectory will host an Open House for both the Oratory of Ss. Gregory and Augustine and the parish of St. Luke. The faithful of both communities are invited to come and tour the first and second floors of the rectory from 12:30 pm until 2:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. This is a wonderful opportunity not only to see where and how the priests live but also for the two communities to come together. Please make every effort to attend.

YOUTH GROUP

The oratory is interested in starting a youth group for students ages 14 through 18. This group would be primarily social with a service component. Ideally it would meet monthly during the school year.

If interested, please contact Kristen Colton at Coltonfam10@gmail.com or (314) 481-3263 by Christmas.

BULLETIN ASSISTANCE

We are making progress with transitioning to a bulletin for our use on Sundays.  The bulletin is paid for by the generating of advertisements on the back page of the bulletin. The company assisting with the bulletin would like to approach business that would have an affiliation with the Oratory. If you own your own business and would be willing to advertise on our bulletin beginning in the new year, please contact me to let me know. Also, if you know of businesses that would be willing to advertise on our bulletin and support the work of the Oratory, please contact me and let me know. You can send the information to me: msgrmorris@gmail.com or call me at (314) 606-2461.  In advance, thank you for your generosity.

ADVENT GIVING TREE

The Oratory will join St. Luke the Evangelist for the Giving Tree this year during the Advent Season.  The Giving Tree this year will support the Saint Vincent de Paul clients of Saint Luke the Evangelist and families that are served by Birthright.

Please take a tag from the tree and be sure to keep it and attach it firmly to your gift, as each numbered tag is for a specific person. Where there is no specific information: size, etc. on the tag you are encouraged to give “no size” gifts such as scarves, gloves, afghans, books, and music. You are also welcomed to give gift cards in any amount. Baby items for Birthright need not be wrapped. Please leave your gift under the tree in three weeks, the weekend of December 15/16th. Welcome to the Oratory of Ss. Gregory and Augustine! We offer you this website as a guide to help you explore the life of the newest parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The recent widening of the “Extraordinary Use of the Mass” (according to the 1962 liturgical books) by Pope Benedict XVI has given birth to a remarkable renaissance of what most of us call simply “the Latin Mass”. In it are to be found a remarkable depth of spirituality and wisdom that so many people are searching for in today’s complex and confusing world.

In the I Book of his Confessions, the other great St. Augustine wrote “Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless until they find rest in Thee.” Whether you are curious about the traditional Latin Mass and interested in exploring its beauty, or you are searching for parish community where you and your family will feel at home, or you are seeking simply rest for your heart, we hope this website will be of some help for you.

My prayer for you is that through these pages you will be able to get a glimpse of our liturgies and connect with some of the faces of the many people who make up our parish. In it you will find sermons, learn about our education programs and our social life, and be able to catch up on our most recent activities. I hope this will give you some sense of the grace of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and work of the Holy Spirit in our midst. I am delighted that God has brought you here! Oremus pro invicem!

—The Very Reverend Monsignor C. Eugene Morris, Rector
